California Scorpionfish - Catalina Island

California Scorpionfish - Catalina Island

This close up view of the California Scorpionfish was taken off Catalina island.
California scorpionfish are an ambush predator. Crustaceans, squids, octopuses, and fish make up the majority of their diet. This ones seems to be lying in wait for dinner to swim by.
They are primarily nocturnal and feed at night.  There are few species that prey on adult California scorpionfish, possibly because of their poisonous dorsal spines. Adult scorpionfish have been found ingested by seven gill sharks.
