Star Trails – Mono Lake Cemetery
The image is a long exposure photograph of star trails over Mono Lake California cemetery. The swirling pattern of light trails is created by the apparent movement of stars around the celestial pole, the North Star. In the foreground, there are several graves marked by indistinct headstones and some grave markers. Artificial flowers, in shades of pink and yellow, are placed on some of the graves, providing a touch of color against the darker landscape. These trees are scattered across the horizon and appear to be leafless, indicating a colder season. The sky transitions from deep black at the very top, where the star trails are densest, to a subtle gradient of purple and then a warm, hazy orange or yellow near the horizon. This gradient is the lingering light of twilight and some artificial light from a distant city lights. The image demonstrates the contrast between the vastness of the cosmos and the stillness of the resting place, highlighting the passage of time and the enduring nature of the night sky.
