Star Trails – Rhyolite Ghost Town

The image shows a dramatic night scene in which an abandoned, multi-story concrete ruin dominates the foreground against a sweeping, long-exposure star-trail sky. Warm light, from orange street lights, bathes the surfaces of the ruin and the nearer ground. That warm illumination emphasizes the roughness of the concrete, highlighting horizontal grooves and casting deep shadows into the open window and door apertures. The night sky is the dominant element: a dense field of concentric star trails that curve around a bright rotation center located at the North star. The composition uses strong verticals of the ruin against circular horizontals of the star trails, producing a visually arresting tension. The mood is otherworldly and contemplative, evoking isolation, history and the passage of time.
