Peacock Mantis Shrimp with Eggs – Anilao
A macro photograph of a Peacock mantis shrimp that is carrying a clutch of bright orange eggs. Its extraordinarily complex eyes are prominently featured, with large, bulbous structures that are a deep, rich brown with concentric lines. The area around the eyes is a striking turquoise blue.
The body of the mantis shrimp is segmented and covered in a vibrant, iridescent exoskeleton. Delicate, feathery appendages are visible near its head and mouthparts, and its larger, raptorial appendages are also visible, also displaying the same multi-colored banding. The clutch of eggs is a focal point, situated directly below the mantis shrimp’s head. They are a uniform, bright coral orange and are packed densely together, creating a textured mound. The eggs are small, spherical, and are attached to the underside of the mantis shrimp. The composition emphasizes the intricate details of the mantis shrimp’s anatomy and its brood. The overall impression is one of intense detail, color, and the fascinating reproductive cycle of a marine creature. This image was taken off Anilao near Batangas in the Philippines.
