Manzanar Cemetery – Eastern Sierra California
In the foreground stands the Manzanar cemetery monument—a pale stone obelisk rising out of the desert, centered and solitary. Vertical Japanese characters are carved down its face, catching just enough light to stand out against the stone. Beyond the monument, unseen in the dark, are the remains of the Manzanar internment camp. A place that Japanese Americans were sent during World War II. All backed by jagged mountains on the horizon. Above everything, the sky absolutely dominates: the Milky Way arcs across the frame in a dense band of stars, glowing with layers of purples, golds, and soft whites. The stars feel almost overwhelming—vast and timeless—contrasting sharply with the stillness and restraint of the cemetery below.
The overall mood is solemn but awe-filled. It feels like a place of remembrance held under an infinite sky, where human history, loss, and resilience sit quietly beneath the scale of the universe.
